"My fear was not of death itself, but a death without meaning." -Huey Newton
"My fear was not of death itself, but a death without meaning." When Huey Newton said this, I think he meant that his biggest fear was dying without a cause. It seems like he wouldn't want to die for no reason because that's pointless. This is probably why he worked so hard for his beliefs throughout his lifetime.

Huey P. Newton was born February 17, 1942 in Monroe, Louisiana. He was one of the founders of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. It was an organization for African Americans who were against the violent acts of the white Americans. They wanted a way to defend themselves. Huey Newton and his friend Bobby Seale created the Black Panthers in October of 1966. Huey Newton was the Minister of Defense while Bobby Seale was the Chairman. Many African Americans wanted to join this group. They wanted to stop the violent abuse of African Americans by the police force because they were strongly against it. He created a program through the Black Panthers where he helped feed neighborhood children each day before school. In September of 1968, he was accused of killing a police officer and was sentenced to two to fifteen years in prison. During this time, the Blank Panthers began to lose members while he was in jail. The FBI was on a mission to get rid of the Black Panthers because they offered free activities in the community and medical help. Soon after this, he refused to show up on the day of his court date. He became an addition to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s “Most Wanted” list. He fled the country and went to Cuba for three years. A few years later he was shot and killed in a drug related issue.

Huey Newton is a hero to me because he tried his best to make life better in local communities. He gave them free breakfast, food, clothing, and medical tests. He was strong, courageous, determined, and a leader. Huey Newton met my criteria for being a hero.

Huey Newton had a major impact on the world today. If he hadn’t created the Black Panthers, our life might not be the same way it is today because of all the accomplishments they had made.
