“ We know the road to freedom has always been stalked by death” (Angela Davis) |
I think this quote means freedom is worth dying for.
Angela Davis was born in Birmingham Alabama. In 1965 she graduated from Brandeis University. She became an assistant lecturer at the University of California but was fired for being a member of the Communist party. However, her involvement with the Soledad brothers (three black inmates accused of killing a prison guard) is what truly changed her life. Angela was head of their defense committee, and on August 7 of 1970 the youngest brother took the judge and four hostages in hopes to free his brother. In the end he killed the judge, all hostages, and then himself using a gun registered to Davis. She then went undercover. A warrant was issued for her arrest and Davis was placed on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list. Later that year she was arrested and served two years In prison, one count of murder and five counts of kidnapping. In 1972 she was acquitted of all charges by an all white jury. One of her biggest accomplishments was receiving the Lenin Peace Prize in 1979. A year later she ran for president. She is currently a professor at University of California, Santa Cruz where she teaches history of consciousness. Her main focus is issues to do with racial oppression, minorities, women’s rights, prison reform, and the culture of music. Angela is also an author of many books. (Women, Race, and Class). Angela Davis is a hero to me because she is strong and she fights for what she believes in. Davis believes in equality for people of all races, men and women. Even though people tried to stop her from doing what she thought was right she never gave up. Angela Davis is leaving a mark on the world through her teaching. She wants her students to see how she views the world.
