Father Francisco Paulo and Lt. Jose Joaquin Moraga were both members from the de Anza Expedition. They founded Mission San Francisco de Asis on June 26, 1776. It was the 6th mission built in California, and was also the sixth mission for the El Camino Real. It is now named Mission Dolores. It was named for Saint Francis of Assis. The mission is located in San Francisco number 3323 16th Street in California near the San Francisco Bay.

San Francisco De Asis’s pueblo is called Yerba Buena. It was established under the direction of Father Juniperra Serra. In their cemetery there’s a statue of Father Junipero Serra. It was donated by the William H. Hannon foundation. A large part of the graves were some Native Americans and some staff that worked at the mission. Their cemetery also contains a great variety of the following: shrubs, flowers and plants. Their Rose Garden was given through the Golden Gate Rose Society. It is watched over by the members from the Society every week.

The Spanish missionaries built the mission out of thousands of adobe bricks they were about 10 ft. thick. It was made out of bright façade whitewashed adobe bricks. Some other Natives helped build the mission like the Ohlone and Miowok Indians. Mission Dolores’s first celebration was June 29, 1776.

San Francisco de Asis church is an active parish and is the best-known church in San Francisco. It has twin bell towers with an arched entrance near by the courtyard. It is the only intact Mission Chapel in the chain of 21 missions established under the direction of Father Junipero Serra.

Life was doing well until one of the biggest earthquakes started. It happened April 18, 1906. Although Mission Dolores was in San Francisco, San Francisco De Asis and it’s church did not get damaged for the thick walls that the Spanish built.

Because of the bad weather it took about a whole year to baptize the Native Americans. Life was hard for the Native Americans for the severe weather affected their work at the mission. More than 5,000 Native Americans died form the disease measles. Soon they decided to make a hospital.

Mission San Francisco De Asis has people coming almost every day. People go there to learn their custom and how life works there
