San Francisco De Solano

San Francisco De Solano was founded by Father Jose Altimia on July 4, 1823. San Francisco De Solano was the last 21st mission built in California.

The Native Americans were forced to learn Christianity and gave up customs. Some of the customs they had to give up were beliefs, clothes, and their homes. The location of San Francisco De Solano is in the town of Sonana 20 miles of San Francisco on State Highway 12.

The Indians that worked there were mainly Miwok and Pomo Indians. The Miwok lived in Penisula across from the missions, and the Pomo lived farther north. The Miwoks were the ones that usually gathered the food. They were the hunters and the gathers. They did not grow crops or raise animals. Instead, they gathered plants and hunted in the wild like sea life and forest animals.
