Shield Volcanoes

Shield Volcanoes are one of the different types of volcanoes. One of the most famous shield volcano is Kilauea. It is located in Hawaii. Shield volcanoes are known for their shield-shape. That is why they are called shield volcanoes.

Lava

Their silica content in their lava is low. The lava also contains high viscosity, which means it contains a lot of liquid. That makes the lava runny. When the volcano erupts, the lava spreads out and cools to increase the width of the volcano. That is what forms the shape of the volcano. Shield volcano’s lava is effusive, because it contains so much fluid.

The Cause and Form of Volcanoes

What makes the volcano is tectonic plates. When two tectonic plates converge, or push together, the land pushes up to form a mountain. A crack forms in the lithosphere, or crust, and magma comes through the crack. Eventually, the magma will rise and a volcano erupts.
