A lot of people died in early Texas. Women married young and had lots of kids. The women had to do a lot on their own because the husbands were gone for long periods. They became “frontier women.”

Early Texans sometimes did not take a bath for a whole year! They chewed tobacco and even children chewed it.

The Republic of Texas was its own country for less than 10 years.

These early Texans were tough, independent and they made a life out of harsh conditions.
