Most lung cancers are caused by smoking.8 out of 10 lung cancer victims smoke. It is the leading cause of deaths in the United States. African Americans have a better chance of getting lung cancer than European Americans. Some symptoms of lung cancer are cough, shortness of breath, hoarseness and pain. The risk of lung cancer in ex smokers starts going down after 5 years. But still in 15 to 20 years they still have 20% chance of getting lung cancer. Lung cancer can also be caused by second hand smoke. About 3,000 lung cancer deaths were caused by passive smoking.
