1. 1521-The first recorded expedition reached the Carolina Coast

2. 1666-Capt. Robert Sanford, explored, and took formal possession for England and Lords Proprietors

3.1670- First permanent English settlements, and Capital City Charles Town was founded

4.1788- South Carolina became the 8th state

5.1860- South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union prior to the Civil War

The highest point in South Carolina is Sassafras Mountain. 90% of South Carolina is wooded. There is a lot of marshes and the longest river is the Savannah River. There are no natural lakes in South Carolina! South Carolina has many beaches and dunes.
