What are some stereotypes about physical disabilities?

One stereotype would be that phsically disabled people can’t play sports or be involved in activities like any other person. In actuality, there are special programs for them to be involved in or they can be involved in a regular team. One example would be of a kid named Adam Bender who is eight years old and wen he was just a baby he had to get his leg amputated due to a tumor that was wrapped around it. He participates in many sports though such as wrestling, football, soccer and baseball, he is aware of the program for children of his circumstance which is called the Miracle League but he still chooses to participate on regular teams. He also has his own website that encourages other children to participate in games and ignore their physical disabilities. So this would be a great case of someone that doesn’t want to let his disability hold him back.

What needs to happen in order to stop the marginalization of this group?

I think people need to be more understanding and not be so quick to judge people of the circumstances, because it isnt fair to never even give them any kind of chance. Also, I thin others need to try and help out, and a lot of people never really want to try and accommodate their needs so they end up feeling like they arent important. Businesses need to be able to build ramps and put handicap buttons beside their doors. For a company to refuse to accommodate them in that sort of way would just be ridiculous, they need that little extra help and it really wouldn’t be a hard thing to do. Other things to consider would be that theyunderstand they have a disability and by not acknolwleding their disability would be like not acknowleding the person, or if a person is in a wheelchair and you will be having a conversation for an extended amount of time you should probably help them out by going to their eye level but also you shouldn’t use their wheelchair as a place to hang or lean on because it is inappropriate unless you know them because their chair is still their own personal space.

Marginalized
The physically disabled are marginalized because their different. You may say it’s a harsh way to put it but it’s true. We the norms place judgment on what people look like on outside appearance. When one is physically different based on appearance we place an automatic judgment on their personality and what it might be like as well. Sometimes it’s because of a comfort zone and other times it’s just because people are mean.
If you or I were in gym class and we saw a person without legs we would probably assume they were not capable to play football. So would you ask them? No because you’re afraid of the reaction you might get.
So people with physical disabilities are marginalized almost based off of fear.

Parts of society my group is excluded from

Something I really don’t think everyday people take into consideration is the fact we are all individuals. Not a one person in this world is the same. It’s just the people with unusual appearances on the outside we notice and single out more. Such as individuals with missing legs and arms or any other deformity.
A part of society that people with physical disabilities are excluded from is School activities. No one thinks about how the kid with the wheel chair or no arm is going to play dodge ball. People don’t think about how people are going to get to the bottom of the bleachers where everyone stands at football games. What about Restaurants, malls, and amusement parks. I know those places are not all handy cap friendly. We need to have Elevators in all public places. It’s time to start making things fair. We the so called norms don’t consider ones feelings in ways to make an environment handy cap friendly.
