Magnesium does not occur uncombined with other elements. Magnesium is obtained from sea water. It is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust. It is found in large deposits of magnesite, dolomite, and other elements. This element was isolated by A.A.B. Bussy and Sir Humphrey Davy in 1808. Magnesium is used to make incendiary bombs, missiles, flares, fireworks, and airplanes. The element was discovered by Joseph Black in England. Magnesium's origin of name is a Greek district in Thessaly called Magnesia.
