Bickerdyke, Mary

Mary Ann Bickerdyke served as a nurse during the civil war. 1.She assisted doctors in Cincinnati, Ohio during the cholera epidemic in 1837. 2. Ten years later she married Robert Bickerdyke.3.They moved to Galesburg, Illinois in 1856. 4.After two years Robert Bickerdyke died. Mary continued to work as a nurse to support her two young sons. 5. Bickerdyke spent the war traveling with union soldiers. 6. Bikerdyke risked her own life going out in the war searching for wounded soldiers. During the darkness she took a lantern to retrieve wounded soldiers. 7. Mary Bickerdyke died on November 8, 1901 at the age of 84.
