Hi, I am the kidney. I live in the excretory system, which is a passive biological system that removes excess, unnecessary or dangerous materials from an organism. The major function of me is that I remove urea and other wastes from the blood. I keep the materials that the human body needs and clean out unneeded ones. I also serve essential regulatory roles in most animals and humans. In the body I am neighbors with the gallbladder and the pancreas. One coworker that I have is the nephrons, which is a filter. Some fun facts about the kidneys are that each kidney is about 4 ½ inches long. Kidneys have a higher blood flow than even the brain, liver, or heart. Over 400 gallons of recycled blood is pumped through the kidney every day. Another fun fact is each kidney contains from 1 to 2 million nephrons.

There are many ways to keep your kidney healthy. For example, you can control weight, do not smoke, monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose, exercise, and to eat healthy. One health issue about the kidney is a kidney failure. This is when your kidney fails to do its appropriate job or function. It cannot filter through the waste that humans produce. This is extremely dangerous and could result in death. Some symptoms are nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. A cure to the kidney failure is a kidney transplant. Another health issue is a kidney stone. This is a calculus (a large lump produced by mineral salts) formed in the kidney. This can cause pain in the back, side, and stomach. Some symptoms of the illness are feeling sick to the stomach, vomiting, and nausea. One cure to healing this is to dissolve the kidney stones.
