Blackbeard’s real name was supposedly Edward Teach. People do not know where he came from, but he had good reading and writing skills. Most people think that he came from Jamaica. When Queen Anne\'s War began, Blackbeard became a privateer. A privateer is a person who commands private ships for the Government.

After Queen Anne\'s War, Blackbeard became a pirate under Benjamin Hornigold. Blackbeard helped him, so Blackbeard got his own ship. Blackbeard soon became the most feared figure in the sea. He was famous for lighting his beard on fire. Sometimes, he shot his own men. One of his headquarters was at Nassau in the Bahamas. If you surrendered to him he wouldn\'t harm you, but he would fight if you didn\'t. He was an amazing fighter, so most people just gave him their valuables.

British officials gave pirates who turned themselves in a second chance. Around 1718, Blackbeard sailed to Bath, North Carolina and gave up piracy. He lived near Governor Charles Eden and was reported to have married his 14th wife! Soon, he broke the vow and robbed ships in the Carolinas. His hideout was near Ocracoke Inlet. Then, Virginia’s Governor Alexander Spotswood sent Robert Maynard to kill Blackbeard. Blackbeard kept on fighting even though, he was stabbed and shot in the back multiple times. His throat was sliced off by a British soldier and that was his death.

There are many rumors about Blackbeard. When people in North Carolina hear a howling noise, they claim it is Blackbeard saying, “Where is my head.\'\' Another rumor is that when people see lights on the beach they say it is Blackbeard looking for his head with a lantern. People also have claimed that Blackbeard is the Devil himself.
