Florence Nightingale was born in May 12, 1820 and died August 13, 1910. She loved to help people but was also founder of modern nursing. What she really loved was math, even more so statistics. PROFESSIONS: nurse, mathematician EDUCATION: But she never earned any degrees. Her parents didn\'t approve of her wanting to be a mathematician and nurse.But after a while her parents permitted her to be a tutor. Sadly, her parents were firmly against her gaining any more experience, so she only took care of family and friends at the time. WORK EXPERIENCE: In 1850 she started training as a nurse at The Institute of St. Vincent De Paul in Alexandria, Egypt. When she returned in 1853, she took an unpaid position as a superintendent at the Establishment for Gentlemen During Illness. AWARDS + ACHIEVEMENTS: Some of her achievements are at the hospital (Establishment for Gentlemen During Illness) Nightingale used her data to calculate the mortality rate in the hospital. Which made her realize the hospital needed improving in sanitary methods employed would result in a decrease in deaths. As a result, she created a Polar Area Diagram or as she called it \"coxcombs\", they were used to give graphical representation of the mortality figures. In 1860 Nightingale Training School opened with 10 students. Also in 1874 she became an honorary member of the American Statistical Association. She also got The Royal Red Cross. ACTIVITIES + INTERESTS: But she did do things in her spare time too. She liked to catalog her possessions. She really liked to go to church, religion was very important to her. INTERESTING FACTS: But interestingly she was never married. In addition to that, she suffered from depression. Also she was engaged for 7 years and turned him down. She overcame everything and now she is one of the most remembered mathematician. |
