DATE OF BIRTH August 17, 1601
DATE OF DEATH January 12, 1665 PROFESSIONS French lawyer, mathematician EDUCATION University of Orléans bachelor in civil law in 1626 WORK EXPERIENCE He studied at the Franciscan Monastery as a child, and later attended the University of Toulouse. Later, Fermat studied and received his degree in Civil Law from the University of Orleans. He made conjectures concerning the work of Galileo and developed a method of finding the quadrature of curves. In 1651, a plague left Fermat ill and isolated in Toulouse. During this time period, he developed a interest in number theory. His dedication to number theory led to the work known today as Fermat’s Last Theorem. It says, \"If n is any whole number and p is any prime, then np - n is divisible by p\". PROFESSIONAL SKILLS LAWYER: Government official MATHEMATICIAN: Enigmatic problem solver AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Founder of modern number theory and probability theory Did much to establish coordinate geometry Invented a number of methods for determining maxima and minima for calculus Discovered Fermat\'s Last Theorem that states the equation x n + y n = z n, where x, y, z, and n are nonzero integers, has no solutions for n that are greater than 2 ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS Challenges in math Making Theories |
