Graphite can be found in China, India, Brazil, North Korea and Canada. The luster of graphite is metallic. The color of graphite can vary from black to gray. The streak is black. The hardness of graphite on the Mohs scale is 1-2. The cleavage is perfect. In the past graphite has been called black lead, plumbago, pencil ore and grafito. Graphite was first used to mark sheep. The British navy used it to make cannonballs. Graphite has the ability to conduct electricity. The lead in pencils is actually graphite and clay combined. All diamonds are slowly becoming graphite.
