Demeter was a Greek Goddess, the Goddess of harvest. She is known as Ceres to the Romans. She was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea. The first loaf of bread was given to her every year because she was known for making corn and harvest grow. Her daughter Persephone was taken by Hades to the underworld. Because Demeter had lost her daughter she put a curse on all the crops to wither and die. Zeus alarmed for the return of his daughter but because she had been taken to the underworld and ate 6 of the seeds that\'s Hades had given her.. Hades now had all control over her. Without her daughter winter was created by the sadness that had overcome Demeter. Once Persephone was returned there was happiness once again. Because she had eaten the 6 seed, Zeus her father claimed that for 6 months out of the year she had to stay in the underworld, where her mother would cry for her return.. for the other 6 months out of the year she was to return to her mother where crops and plants would bloom once more. This created the seasons.
