James Fannin was a man who was said to be a very week leader. He was born January 1,1804 and died March 27,1836. He was married and had 2 daughters in 1834 . He was adopted by his grandfather James w. Walker and was raised on a plantation near Marion. In January of 1836 Fannin was appointed by the provisional government as a agent to raise troops and money for the republic. James Fannin, during the Texas revaluation by the Mexican army under orders from General and president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.Despite the protests for clemency by General José de Urrea, the massacre was reluctantly carried out by Lt. Colonel José Nicolás de la Portilla under orders from Santa Anna.
