Lorenzo De Zavala was a fascinating person who was born on October 3, 1788 in the village of Tecoh. He was a writer who edited many newspapers. After writing and editing many years later, he was arrested in 1814 for democratic reforms. During his inprisonment he taught himself English and gained a lot of knowledge from reading medical textbooks which qualified for him to study and practice medicine.
Later on when Zavala was released he then married Teresa Carrea. They had three kids. Zavala, a strong federalist was forced to leave politics and after a period of house arrest the federalism decided to send Lorenzo to go into exile in June 1830. He then decided to flee where he ended up arriving in New York and stayed for a few years until he then returned to Mexico in 1832.
He arrived in Texas in 1835 and since then he was drawn into the political caldron of Texas in 1835 and since then he was drawn into the political caldron of Texas politics. His wife Teresa then died a few days later. Zavala first advocated the cause of Mexican federalism within a few weeks he became an active supporter. And served in the permanent council.
Lorenzo De Zavala married Emily West and later became the representative of Harrisburg. Zavala rejoined his family at their home at Zavala point on Buffalo Bayou which they had fled to Galveston Island as Santa Anna\'s army pursued Zavala and other cabinet members across Texas. He returned shortly after they brought an end to the peace commission in very poor health.
Less than a month later soaked and half frozen by a norther after his rowboat overturned in Buffalo Bayou. He developed pneumonia on November 15, 1836. And passed away in 1837. He was buried at him home in a cemetery marked by the state in 1931. The plot is now sunken in the Buffalo Bayou.
