Mercury`s name comes from the Greek name, hydrargyrum. Hydrargyrum also known as quicksilver, named after the fastest moving plated in our solar system, Mercury. Mercury was known to the ancient Chinese and Hindus and has been found in 3500 year old Egyptian tombs. Mercury is not found in open nature. It is found in cinnabar deposits. Spain and Italy produce more that half of the worlds mercury. Its atomic number and symbol is Hg80.

There are several physical properties mercury. Mercury is a heavy, silvery-white liquid metal. Compared to other metals, it is a poor conductor of heat, but a fair conductor of electricity. It has a freezing point of -38.83 degrees celsius and has a boiling point of 356.73 degrees celsius. Solid mercury can be cut with a knife.

A chemical properties of mercury is that it does not react with most acids. Mercury does dissolves many other metals such as gold and silver to form amalgams. Iron flasks have traditionally been used to trade mercury.

There are some interesting facts about mercury. One fact is mercury can be extremely poisonous to humans. Another one is mercury is the only metal that is a liquid at standard temperature and pressure. Mercury is generally not allowed on aircraft because it combines so readily with aluminum. Those are some interesting facts about mercury.
