Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse is an example of historical fiction. The Dust Bowl and the Great Depression are real historical events, but Billie Jo Kelby, her family, and friends are not real people. Franklin D. Roosevelt became president during the time of the Dust Bowl and was mentioned several times in this novel.
