Grenzbrigadeküste Beach Patrol

The Grenzbrigadeküste (Coastal Border Brigade), headquartered at Rostock on the Baltic coast accounted for approximately 2,750 of the 16,300 personnel of the DDR’s naval forces. The brigade was made up of 8 boat groups to patrol coastal waters and 12 battalions to patrol the coastal shoreline. The mission of the Grenzbrigadeküste was to patrol the Baltic Sea border of the DDR and to secure the sea border against "those DDR citizens who turn their backs on the republic." The Grenzbrigadeküste operated 10 Bremse class guard boats and 18 Kondor-I-class submarine chasers. These Grenzbrigadeküste personnel were dressed in typical Volksmarine uniforms and they held VM ranks, but displayed a Grenzbrigadeküste cap tally. The Grenzbrigadeküste had its own training facility.

The Grenzbrigadeküste was organized as such:
Grenzbrigade KÜSTE Rostock
I Grenzbataillon Bansin
II Grenzbataillon Stubbenkammer
III Grenzbataillon Graal-Müritz
IV Grenzbataillon Tarnewitz
V Grenzbataillon Kühlungsborn

7. Grenzbootgruppe Stralsund
8. Grenzbootgruppe Wismar

The Grenzbrigadeküste personnel were distinctly identified by their Grenzbrigadeküste cap tallys , bright green lapel patches (on the navy enlisted man's winter peacoat), and bright green shoulderboard piping (all ranks).
