In the early days of the NVA (1956-1960), soldiers participated in field operations wearing Soviet–made combat uniforms over their NVA drill uniforms. These 3-piece uniforms had a distinct red-brown appearance featuring a traditional Soviet camouflage pattern made up of red-brown, ochre, and light green. Manufactured from heavy canvas cloth these camouflage over-garments featured a button-on hood. This was clearly a temporary expedient and the NVA began to design a camouflage combat uniform that would a purely DDR item. |
