SOCIAL STUDIES CHAPTERS 14-17 SEMESTER PROJECT MEMBERS:______________________________________ You will be teamed with other students and will be responsible for creating a newspaper representative of the time periods leading up to and continuing through the Civil War. Your team has been assigned to write a newspaper from the perspective of the _____________. You will be given in-class time to prepare your newspaper based on information you have learned. You will use that time to plan not only this edition, but future editions as well. Besides your work in class, you will be expected to work on your own at home. As we continue learning about this period of American history, you will be asked to add to your team’s newspaper. Each group’s newspaper will contain the following styles of writing: PERSUASIVE - 2 opposing editorials CREATIVE - classified ads, political cartoons, man on the street interviews RESEARCH - news articles researched using at least 2 outside sources (besides text) of approximately 1 typed page in length, and submitted with a bibliography card. By the end of this assignment, each member of the group will have contributed at least one item from each of the three styles. IN OTHER WORDS, EACH OF YOU HAS THREE SMALL WRITING ASSIGNMENTS. You will receive an individual grade for your work. Your grade will be determined by your research article and your understanding of the time period as reflected in your other writings. OPPOSING EDITORIALS You are required to write TWO (2) editorials on the same subject, but expressing different points of view. Each editorial must be written as if you really believe the point of view you are expressing. Remember that your newspaper represents either the North or the South, BUT NOT BOTH. Articles must be typed with a font size no larger than 14. RESEARCH ARTICLE Your research article must show your understanding of the topic you chose, but should sound like a newspaper and not a report. By choosing your words carefully, you can state facts while showing sympathy to your side. (Ex: Over two hundred of our brave confederate soldiers... or This valiant ex-slave performed heroic acts for her fellow runaways...) A bibliography card containing your two sources, authors (when possible) copyrights, publishers, or Internet addresses must be submitted at the same time as your article. Articles must be typed with a font size no larger than 14. Any written sections of your project must be typed (font size 12-14 ). If you do not have a typewriter or computer, see me and I will schedule a time when you may use the class computer. Research is YOUR responsibility. There will be NO scheduled class time in the library. This project counts as one Unit Test grade. Due Dates: First Assignment Second Assignment Final Assignment Five (5) points will be subtracted from your grade each day a section is late. |
