ART 8 EXPLORATORY SEMESTER COURSE

This one semester course is an elective offered to any eighth grade student not enrolled in year long Band or Chorus. The guidelines for each area of study will be determined by state SOL requirements, students’ interest and levels of ability. It is not necessary to have previous experience or talent since our main goal is to explore art in an enjoyable, non-judgmental fashion. Each unit highlights an element of art, considered to be the building blocks for successful artwork. A variety of methods and material will be made available to each student, with exposure to their many applications

THE ELEMENT “LINE” UNIT- 4 WEEKS

SOL 8.1, 8.2, 8.5, 8.9, 8.11, 8.12, 8.15, 8.18, 8.19
Students will participate in projects related to line and its properties. Techniques used will include drawing, printmaking, and scratchboard. A variety of art media will be introduced such as markers, pen and ink, linoleum and scratchboard.
Concepts and Vocabulary:
Contour, gesture, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, expressive line, variety in line, movement, hatching, cross-hatching, texture.

THE ELEMENT “SHAPE” UNIT- 4 WEEKS

SOL 8.2, 8.5, 8.7, 8.9, 8.11, 8.12, 8.14, 8.15, 8.18, 8.19, 8.20
Students will participate in projects that use shape as their main art focus. Techniques in drawing, collage, and graphic arts will be used. Materials to be uses are pencil, charcoals, paper, paint, graphics programs.
Concepts and Vocabulary:
Shading, proportion, positive/negative shape, graphic arts, balance, emphasis, geometric, organic, texture, calligraphy.

THE ELEMENT COLOR UNIT- 3 WEEKS

SOL 8.1, 8.2, 8.9, 8.10, 8.14, 8.15, 8.18, 8.19, 8.20, 8.21, 8.22
Students will participate in projects involving color and its properties. Drawing, painting, and collage techniques will be studied. Materials used will include crayon, oil pastels, colored pencil, collage, watercolor and tempera paints.
Concepts and Vocabulary:
Color wheel, primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors, color scheme, warm colors, cool colors, analogous, complimentary, monochromatic, value, tint, shade, hue, intensity, blending.

THE ELEMENT FORM UNIT- 4 WEEKS

SOL 8.1, 8.2, 8.5, 8.6, 8.7, 8.10, 8.11, 8.12, 8.13, 8.15, 8.16, 8.18, 8.19, 8.22
Projects involving methods of creating three dimensional artworks will include a combination of the following: clay, paper mache, weaving, quilting, found objects, bookmaking and manipulated paper.
Concepts and Vocabulary: form, three dimensional, mixed media, structure, armature, unity, texture, clay properties, positive space, negative space, mount, proportion, texture

THE ELEMENT SPACE UNIT- 2 WEEKS

SOL 8.1, 8.2, 8.4, 8.5, 8.7, 8.8, 8.9, 8.10, 8.13, 8.15, 8.18, 8.19, 8.22
Projects involving spacial relationships on a two dimensional surface will include drawings in perspective, landscape, and still life.
Concepts and Vocabulary:
Silhouette, shading, one point perspective, viewpoint, depth, converging line, positive space, negative space, repetition, movement, background, foreground.

ART HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY

SOL 8.7, 8.8, 8.11, 8.12, 8.13, 8.14, 8.15, 8.16, 8.17, 8.18, 8.20, 8.21, 8.22
Students will be introduced to the use of technology in art and subjects related to art history on a regular basis as part of each element unit.
