Signs of the Times

Colonial Trades

Links:

Take a walk in the past. You are living in colonial America in the 1700s in a fairly large city like Philadelphia or Williamsburg - places where people come to get things they need or want.

What would the colonial people need? How about barrels, or candles, or wigs, or bread? Maybe they wanted a new dress or a carriage or a copy of the Bible. Whatever they wanted, there was a tradesperson who could create it for them.

Your mission: You are to assume the identiy of an apprentice to a tradesperson and create a trade sign to let people know what is for sale. One thing you must remember...many people still were uneducated and could not read words, so your sign must have a way of conveying your information without words.

An example: what do you think of when you see the big golden arches as your family is traveling the highway? That you can find food inside!

So, let your creative juices flow. The manner of presentation is totally up to you - anything from an actual sign to a paper representation is acceptable. You must follow the guidelines given here and discussed in class, and your project must be neat.

Remember:
This assignment is a major grade worth 100 points in the grade book.
