Athens vs. Sparta

Webquest

Your task:

Help! We have lost all our records on Sparta and Athens in Ancient Greece! Though we know these were two of the most important city-states in Ancient Greece for many reasons, we don't remember why.

This means that future 6th graders at Urbana Middle School will not be able to compare and contrast Athens and Sparta. However, you have been chosen to collect as much material and information as you can about these two city-states, so that we can continue teaching about the amazing Ancient Greece. The future of the Greece unit is in your hands!

Directions:

1. You will be working with a partner on this project. One of you will be reporting on "Athens" and the other will be reporting on "Sparta."

2. Depending on which city-state you are, you must collect information for that city-state. The group member who is assigned to Athens will have a different worksheet packet than the one who is assigned to Sparta.

3. Use the links provided on the right-hand side of the page to find the answers to the questions/activities in your packet.

4. Only use the links provided, there is no need to go to any other websites because all of the information you'll need can be found in the ones given.

5. After you and your partner have collected all your information on Athens and Sparta, you must compare and contrast what you have found. Take time to discuss your findings with your partner and complete the "Comparing/Contrasting Athens and Sparta" section of your packets. (Will be found at the end of your packets.)

6. Though this last section should be completed as a group, each group member must write down answers on their own packets to be graded.

NOTE: the last two links entitled "Greek Timeline Quiz" and "Who Wants to be a Greek Millionaire" are fun websites for you to explore only after completion of your assigned task. Unless your teacher has checked in your assignment and given you permission, you may not go to these sites.

How will I be graded?

Grades for this assignment will be given based on the following:
* cooperation and teamwork
* behavior and attitude in computer lab
* satisfactory completion of packet
* showing an understanding of how Athens and Sparta were similar and different.
