INTRODUCTION Are you curious about what is like to be a teacher in the UK?
Are you considering going on a Teaching Exchange to Britain in the future? Do you want to know more about the subjects they teach, the kind of schools they can work for, the examinations they prepare their pupils for, and… their salary?
YOUR TASKS Take a piece of paper, note down (or print) the following questions and start browsing the links on the right to find out the answers. Don’t forget to mention your sources for the answers to each question.
QUESTIONS 1. Do they follow the same curriculum in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales? Which one is quite different from the rest? 2. What’s the compulsory school age for state schools in the UK? (compulsory = obligatory) 3. Can you name some of the subjects they teach in England, Northern Ireland and Wales? How would you translate them into Spanish? 4. What’s an “independent” school? Do we have anything similar in Spain? 5. What does the abbreviation GCSE stand for? (stand for = mean) 6. What’s the equivalent in Northern Ireland, England and Wales for the Spanish “selectividad”? 7. Watch the video and name the three reasons why foreign students want to study in the UK (according to the British Council).
FINAL TASK Make an outline of the main differences and similarities between the Spanish and British education systems. We will compare them in class.
