Speeches make people nervous in their native language, so it's important to set up your classroom as a safe place where students feel comfortable speaking in front of their peers. For classes of all levels, make sure there is a good group spirit. If students are nervous, allow them to remain seated at their desks rather than standing up at the front of the class. Advanced level: Have students select a topic and prepare a speech outside of class. Use a five-minute time limit for the speech. When the student is finished, have other students ask questions. Intermediate level: Following is a list of impromptu speech topics. Have students select one topic to talk about as much as they can, and have other students ask questions when finished. Lower level: Also use the following list of impromptu speech topics, but allow the students to prepare their speeches outside of class. Again, have the rest of the class ask questions when one student finishes his speech.
