Overview:
This unit covers various literary elements while adding a connection to Civil War history. The students will spend time researching issues of the time period making comparisons to modern societal issues. The lesson allows the student to examine courage and fear as portrayed in The Red Badge of Courage.


Objectives:
Students will identify, apply, and distinguish literary elements, techniques, and characteristics in selected readings.

Outcome 9.1Students will identify and compare literary techniques used within a variety of stories.
9.1.1 Find examples of the following: foreshadowing,personification, characterization, point of view, plot structure, symbolism, & irony. S12.1.5

RBC Final Project Objectives
R9.1 TLW compose a “realistic story” using a first person point of view to re-construct “A Day in the Life” of a soldier.

R9.2 TLW utilize facts about a soldier in completing their “realistic story”.

R9.3 TLW research a specific soldier and the Civil War.
