A historical fiction story is based on history with fictional main characters. The characters and events are related to a specific time period and the facts about the historical period are accurate. Sometimes historical fiction includes real people from history. In Historical Fiction, setting is the most important literary element. The two historical fiction novels we will read this year are Out of the Dust and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. These novels are set in the early 1930s during the time of The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl. As you read each novel note the effect setting has on the plot/conflict, character development, and theme. |
