Course Description: Students begin developing proficiency in listening, reading, and writing skills. Students will embark on a study of Spanish culture as well. Activities include dramatizations, viewing and listening to authentic films, videos, songs, and speech, satellite transmissions, and interactive technology. Course Objectives: The student will be able to: • Apply new vocabulary and syntax into language appropriate to the novice-low to novice-high proficiency range in Spanish. • Develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to communicate information about daily life and activities. • React appropriately in social situations requiring the use of Spanish. • Explore the dynamics of social, economic, and political issues within the Spanish speaking world and community. • Listen to, read, and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of texts corresponding to the novice-high level in Spanish. • Acquire greater knowledge and deeper understanding of the Latin American community. Absences and tardies will affect the participation grade. An attendance grade is given every week. Students earn 20 points daily for attendance to class on time. 10points are taken for each tardy. There is a NSA (nunca sido ausente- never been absent) incentive that will be given at the end of the semester. Projects: Student will be asked to use the internet to do research; it will be their responsibility to find access at school or public libraries. They can obtain a media center pass from me to be used outside of class time. There is a penalty for late assignments. Chapter/ unit projects may include paragraph length discourse, web quests, oral presentation, etc, Speaking Participation: Students are expected to use Spanish exclusively in class discussions and debates, extemporaneous speaking, brief presentation using technology and paired and small-group activities etc., The speaking participation is based on the scale below: 5 Demonstrates excellence Quality Spanish, no English, speaks with ease 4 Demonstrates command Good Spanish, no English, speaks with some ease 3 Demonstrates some level of competence OK Spanish, no English, speaks halting but tries 2 Suggests lack of competence Mostly Spanish, a few English words 1 Demonstrates lack of competence Tries to speak Spanish but has too much English interference 0 Demonstrates lack of competence nonsense Spanish or no Spanish Aural Comprehension Evaluations: Students will be evaluated on how well they understand spoken language. These evaluations will take a variety of forms. Oral Evaluations: Students will be asked to complete dialogues in Spanish. Make-ups: It is your responsibility to make up an assignment that you have missed due to an absence within one week of your return. If the student was only absent for one class session, any missed quizzes or tests will be administered immediately upon the student’s return, as to expedite the return of the other students’ tests and quizzes, since immediate feedback is more beneficial. (*Unless the test is speaking or listening – then it must be made up during an extra help session since I am involved in administering that type of assessment!) If the student missed two or more consecutive days, the student will be given up to one week to complete the assignments. In either case, if the student has not taken the initiative to make up the work in the allotted time frame, he or she will receive a zero. Of course special circumstances will be considered - just speak with me! Please be sure to have the telephone number of at least two reliable classmates in your planner to find out what you missed while you were gone. Also, copy the day’s log upon your return. Expectations: A. Be a prepared learner and attend class daily and on time. 1. Bring textbook, notebook, paper and pen daily. 2. Have homework completed. 3. Be in your seat by the time the bell begins to ring. (For dismissal, wait for my signal). 4. Copy and complete the daily objectives/sponge activity. 5. Use all available resources (schoolnotes and nicenet) B. Be a courteous listener. 1. No loud, unnecessary talking, noise making. 2. Raise your hand for permission to speak or to leave your seat. 3. Absolutely no use of electronic devices. Keep electronic devices off. C. Be a positive class participant. 1. Follow all directions the first time that they are given. 2. Maintain a clean, safe environment (clean up after yourself, no gum chewing or eating). D. Dress appropriately (see student handbook) 1. Gentlemen: “Tuck and pull is mandatory” 2. Ladies: Dress for success. Consequences: • Verbal warning. • Conference with teacher. • Detention and parents called. • Detention and parent conference. • Referral. SPANISH I CLASSROOM POLICIES and PLAGIARISM Agreement: I understand that: • the use of translation programs for more than a word or idiomatic expression is not considered to be my own work and is considered plagiarism. • information gathered from research must be reported in my own words in Spanish and that using material from Spanish publications in any form without citing the source is plagiarism. • the consequence of plagiarism in reports for Spanish class is the same as for English class: a failing grade on the project and disciplinary action.
