In this project you will combine what you have already learned about oceans with some information you have researched on your own. Your final project will be a GIANT cross section of the ocean and will SHOW what you might encounter and experience if you were able to explore each layer of the ocean as well as what you may find on the bottom. This instruction sheet will help to guide your research and outline the requirements of your final product. Please follow ALL directions and make sure to do the best job possible. I want to display these projects throughout the hallways so be creative, accurate, and take pride in your work!

Your journey will start at the surface of the ocean and go through the ecological zones and layers to the bottom. Use your textbook and given Internet resources to help you gather the needed information. Here are all of the things you need to address or represent:

1. At the surface, show how the ocean is part of the water cycle
2. Address how/where surface and deep currents work
3. Show changes in temperature as you go deeper
4. Show changes in salinity as you go deeper
5. Show and Label the continental shelf, slope, and rise
6. Show different characteristics and features of each layer of the ocean – layers to be included are:

a. Epipelagic Zone – Including the intertidal and sublittoral zones
b. Mesopelagic Zone
c. Bathylpelagic Zone
d. Abyssopelagic Zone
e. Hadalpelagic Zone

For EACH layer about you need to include the following:
· Depth
· Sunlight
· 4 plants or animals that live there
-show how they are adapted to life there
-show how they may interact with each other and/or the environment

7. Once you reach the bottom of the ocean you must show and label some of the different features of the ocean floor…try to show at least three different features such as abyssal plains, ocean ridges, sea mounts, hydrothermal vent, trenches, and rift valleys.

Before you begin your research, plan out how you will record and organize the information that you find and need. Feel free to use your Oceanography notebook to take notes in…You are NOT to print information out at the IMC. Take notes on the information you need. If you want pictures, paste them into one document to print out.

Once you have the required information, you are ready to plan out your final project. Brainstorm and come up with the best and most creative way to show, illustrate, and display all the facts you have found. Sketch out a rough draft before you get your giant paper and begin the final product.

When you have your draft together, show it to me. Once I approve it, you may start your final version. This should be done on the bulletin board paper and should be HUGE! I want it to go from the ceiling to the floor! Be creative, neat, and accurate. Make sure things are labeled and you have included all of the requirements. Adding extras in could result in some bonus points! I WANT TO BE AMAZED AT YOUR WORK!

This is a big project and can be a little intimidating at first. Stay organized and focused. Since this is a big project it is worth a lot of points. You will probably regret it if you blow it off, and you will be rewarded if you work hard.

Here are some websites to get you started (PLEASE also use your textbook! Chapters 13 and 14). If you don’t want to type the addresses in go to my project link on our class EDLINE site:

Monsters of the Deep
Layers of the Ocean
Deep Ocean Zones
Ocean Zones
Hydrothermal Vents
Sunlight Zones
Zones & Biodiversity
[Excellent info here!]

You can find sites on your own…Wikipedia IS NOT ALLOWED. Please use these sites to start off. If you use different sites, copy and paste the addresses into a document and hand it in with your project

Good Luck . . . I look forward to seeing your ocean journeys!
