READING GOALS

FIFTH GRADE SEEK

FOR THE THIRD NINE WEEKS, STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE CHOICE OF MEETING THEIR AR GOAL BY READING AND TAKING AR TESTS OR BY PARTICIPATING IN CARVER'S READING OLYMPICS.

In accordance with the Georgia Performance Standards, a fifth grade student should consistently read at least 25 books or book equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words) each year. The materials should include traditional and contemporary literature (both fiction and non-fiction).

For our purposes in SEEK reading this year, we will use the following guidelines to complete this performance standard.

1. All SEEKers must read and earn at least 20 Accelerated Reader points per nine weeks. Students may read at their desired interest level.
2. If an AR test is taken, a score of 80% or better is expected.
3. If an AR test is not taken, a book report sheet must be filled out and turned in to Mrs. Stewart so that credit may be given.

Awards
Students will be awarded media center free time passes for every 5 points they earn above and beyond the goals.
Students meeting goals will attend AR parties within their pod.
Students may earn GOLD CARDS. (150 points, 85%) With a gold card, a student does not have to meet future nine weeks goals. A student may check out 3 books at a time. A student may check out magazines and other books from free time area. A student may earn a permanent free time pass.
