The Tallgrass Prairie
  History, Restoration, Perennial Agriculture

Prairie at Funk's Grove, IL

We have been investigating the tallgrass prairie biome. The tallgrass prairie once covered vast areas of the central United States. Much of it has been lost to residential, commercial and industrial development. Also, much more of the prairie has been converted into monoculture farming, which require large inputs of fuel, fertilizers, herbicides, etc. These depend on cheap oil. Now that the days of cheap oil are over, there is a growing movement to develop perennial agriculture based on research into prairie plants.
In addition, prairie restoration is becoming increasingly important because of the beauty, low maintenance, and low water requirements of the native plants.
