MATHEMATICS

Dear Parents and Students -- Mathematics is not difficult. Mathematics is just different, and tasks that are different become familiar through practice. Learning mathematics, like learning a foreign language, a musical instrument, or an athletic skill, requires long-term practice to develop and maintain mastery of the requisite skills.

This is where parent involvement is crucial. It is essential that your child complete each day’s assignment. Solving these problems day after day is the secret to success. Students need to work every problem. Do not skip problems. With honest effort, the students will experience success and true learning, which will serve them well in the future.

Materials Needed for Class Everyday
Math Book
Red Pen
Yellow Highlighter
Loose-leaf Paper
Math Notebook Pencils
Reading Book

Math Notebook
Organization is an important skill and a key to success in middle school. To help the students nurture this skill, all work will be kept in the math notebook. Please ask to see your child’s daily assignments and encourage them in their work. Class information, class rules and procedures, as well as homework points are also kept in the math notebook.

Homework
Homework is assigned everyday and will be self-checked for a completion grade. The homework grade is based on the percent of the assignment that is complete, not entirely on the number of correct responses. Each homework assignment is worth up to 3 points. It is important to work hard and attempt all homework problems.

Tests
Tests will be after each chapter. Students will have a review day and review practice to help them prepare. Chapter tests count TWICE in the grade book. Quizzes will be given on non-test weeks.
Students may be assigned test corrections as homework to be done in the math notebook. Students may have homework quizzes or pop quizzes periodically.

Resources
Along with the many resources within the Course 1 and Course 2 books, students may also visit classzone.com to look at examples from each chapter, work with flashcards or take practice tests.

Algebra
The Algebra I book is a high school algebra book. Keep in mind that taking this course is a major commitment and will require good study habits, more time spent on homework, strong organizational skills, a willingness to work hard and ask questions, and the ability to persevere when faced with frustration. The students will encounter new and challenging concepts. They are expected to work hard and seek help often.

After School Study Hall
All middle school students are invited to stay after school on any day from 3:15-3:45 to get help, ask questions, or for extra practice.

Please help your child maintain a positive attitude toward math. If your child expresses anxiety about math, help him or her understand what causes the stress. Then talk about ways to eliminate math anxiety. Encourage your child to ask questions and seek help when struggling. Through our combined efforts, your child can experience success.
