Expectations and Procedures

 

 

Purpose and Overview:
The purpose of the Leadership Class is to:
1. Train students in the essentials of and develop critical thinking skills in leadership.
2. Provide leadership-training situation in which students develop an appreciation of the duties and responsibilities of school and community citizenship.
3. Provide both school and community service opportunities.

General Concepts: The student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the effective utilization of leadership skills.
2. Identify and recognize his or her own leadership potential.
3. Recognize that each person in a group has an important contribution.
4. Develop an understanding and appreciation of the benefits of school and community service.

Communication Skills: The student will be able to:
1. Understand the importance of active listening in good communication.
2. Make effective short presentations.
3. Create an effective visual display.
4. Students will have the opportunity to pass CIM Expository speaking.

Possible Units:
1. Project Planning and Implementation
2. Group Process/Team Building
3. Communication
4. Time Management/Goal Setting
5. Stress Management
6. Human Relations
7. Self Awareness/Leadership Potential

Assignments
1. Expect occasional homework: Individual and group work.
2. All handwritten assignments need to be completed in final copy format.
3. Students will need to perform school and community service as part of their grade.

Attendance
1. Come to class every day with a great attitude. This class in based on activities that cannot be made-up.
2. It is your responsibility to find out from a classmate what you missed - questions will be clarified by the instructor.
3. Work that was due the day of the absence will not receive additional make-up days. Long-term projects will also not receive additional time.
4. I will personally contact your parent after 3, 5 and 8 absences or chronic tardies.

Late Work
1. Assignments are due when called for in class.
2. Late work will be graded at 50% and cannot be more than one day late. Students may put work in my box in the main office.
3. There will be no opportunity to make up work for an unexcused absence.
4. Long-range projects and assignments are due on the assigned date regardless of absence. Exception may be made when a parent or a guardian personally contacts me.

Grading Policy
1. Points are earned for daily work, group work, papers, projects, community service, school service and presentations. Most major projects will have increased point value.
2. Percentages are converted to letter grades based on the following scale:

90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
0% - 59% = F

3. Grades will be posted weekly on ESIS. Hard copies may be obtained if you do not have access to Internet.

Behavioral Expectations
1. Be respectful and courteous to others.
2. BE ON TIME. Be seated and ready to begin the lesson when the bell rings.
3. Come prepared to work each day with notebook and writing utensils. Do not expect to be released to your locker to get forgotten supplies.
4. FOOD AND DRINK are NOT allowed in all classrooms, expect water bottles.
5. Turn off your cell phones while in class. Text messaging during class time is not acceptable. MP3 players are acceptable at appropriate time only (i.e. quiet work time).

Tardies
1. Each student will receive 2 free tardies per semester. After that students will lose 5 participation points per incident. Late arriving student’s need to sign-in by the door. Please attach any notes or excuses.

Supplies
1. In general the instructor will provide most supplies. However each student must have a spiral notebook to use for this class. The student will also need two sheets of poster paper. In addition, students may bring in one of the following items to donate to the leadership program - they will receive 10 points extra credit for donated items (up to 20 points) or they can count this donation as school service.

Blue tape or painter’s tape
Stencils
Crafts of any kind
Thank you notes or other cards
Colored Paper – Construction or Computer Paper
Poster Paper
Glue Sticks
Note Cards
Scissors
Post-it notes
Other supplies maybe requested for special projects.
