STEP 4: Results and Conclusions:

As you plan your experiment, you must also decide how you will measure your results.

In making this decision, you must be certain that your measurements are accurate. For example, if you are measuring growth of a plant, you must measure with a ruler from some fixed point. Putting the ruler on top of the soil and measuring will not be accurate because the dirt will shift as the plant is watered. Also, measure the plants before you start so you will have a point of comparison.

Also, while carrying out your experiment, you must keep detailed records of your results and measurements or calculations. Again, keeping a journal will make this much easier. You may also want to take pictures or make drawings (if items are not easily photographed) during the experiment. These pictures can be used on your board or in your written report. Make certain that no faces show in the pictures.

Your results must be summarized with tables or graphs, but you must also provide a written summary of your results for your board. Using graphs or tables is a great way to show your results on your board.

You must also summarize your results with a conclusion. The conclusion will say whether your hypothesis was accepted or rejected and why. Also in your conclusion, you may also mention what did not work, what you would do differently if you did this experiment again (future study), and how you would change the experiment or measurement. Remember that it is okay if you find that your hypothesis was wrong or if you did not prove your hypothesis. This is a learning process.
