IF THE CARBON FOOTPRINT FITS….WEAR IT!

OBJECTIVE:
Students will keep a food diary of their consumption and table waste at all meals and snacks.
Students will evaluate their consumption and compare with classmates.
Students will devise a way to reduce waste in their individual lives.
Students will continue their food diary and monitor for any changes (hopefully positive ones.)

PRIOR LEARNING:
No prior learning is necessary.

MATERIALS:
As per student
Computer with internet access
Secondary Biology textbook
Reference books from school library
Method to collect and submit daily entries.
Recycling should be available (at home or at school).
Food scales and traditional scales for all students.

ROLES IN LESSON:
STUDENT:
Conscientiously gathers information on their consumption and table waste
Provides information to other students to conduct comparisons and share suggestions


TEACHER:
Assist in selecting, obtaining, or purchasing materials for students
Monitor student progress
Provide feedback along with checkpoints for work completion
Complete food diary checks .
Advise students as needed.

WRAP UP:
Students report if and how they reduced their waste. (Encourage students to complete this in a formal manner.)
Students use Carbon Footprint Calculator.

STANDARD 4
Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

7.3a Societies must decide on proposals which involve the introduction of new technologies.
Individuals need to make decisions which will assess risks, costs, benefits, and trade-offs.
