EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!

OBJECTIVE:
Publish a newspaper to distribute to other science classes
Create the newspaper as an instructional tool for teachers in lower grades
Students will inform younger students about the workings of the human body systems
Students will explain how body systems work and how they work together
Include interactive pieces to use in the intended classes

PRIOR LEARNING:
Knowledge of the human body systems and their basic structure and functions

MATERIALS:
As per student
Computer with internet access and MS Word publisher
Secondary Biology textbook
Library reference books

WEBSITES/SUGGESTIONS:

ROLES IN LESSON:
STUDENT:
Students research the structure and function of two body systems
Students will explain the structure and function of these systems and include the methods employed to maintain homeostasis in the body
Students will include information on the results of these systems failing to maintain homeostasis
An anecdotal activity representing the systems and their work (or failure of) will be included in the newspaper
Students will contact other teachers to ensure interest and align curriculum
Students may work in pairs

TEACHER:
Assist in selecting, obtaining, or purchasing materials for students
Monitor student progress
Provide feedback along with checkpoints for work completion

WRAP UP:
Students will have their own pieces for the newspaper (including two body systems, functioning to maintain homeostasis, and anecdotal activities)
Students will publish and distribute newspapers to other teachers

ASSESSMENT:
Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Rubric

NEW YORK STATE STANDARDS:

STANDARD 4
Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

Key Idea 1:
Living things are both similar to and different from each other and from nonliving things.

Major Understandings

1.2a Important levels of organization for structure and function include organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and whole organisms.

1.2b Humans are complex organisms. They require multiple systems for digestion, respiration,
reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, coordination, and immunity. The systems interact to perform the life functions.

1.2c The components of the human body, from organ systems to cell organelles, interact
to maintain a balanced internal environment. To successfully accomplish this, organisms
possess a diversity of control mechanisms that detect deviations and make corrective
actions.

1.2d If there is a disruption in any human system, there may be a corresponding imbalance
in homeostasis.

1.2e The organs and systems of the body help to provide all the cells with their basic
needs. The cells of the body are of different kinds and are grouped in ways that enhance
how they function together.
