By the end of this unit, you will have read a translation of the Old English poem Beowulf. After participating in both small group work and large group discussions, you will thoroughly understand the work’s underlying themes, such as loyalty, the heroic culture, leadership, fate, reputation, and the role of Christian and pagan values in society. You will be able to identify elements of the poem’s construction like alliteration and kennings. In addition, you will be able to discuss the poem’s genre and will compare and contrast modern film adaptations to the poem. |
