Chapter 12
  Friction and Drag Force

Pages F18 - 21

Friction - Friction is a force that opposes the motion of one object sliding over another.

When describing a force, one has to state both an amount and a direction to describe it completely.

Types of Friction: (pg. F20)
Sliding Friction - object is pushed across a surface.
Static Friction - occurs between objects not moving.
Rolling Friction - friction between a surface & rolling balls or wheels.

Drag Force - Force that opposes the motion of an object moving through a gas or liquid.

Drag force depends on the objects speed. The faster the speed, the greater the drag force.

Drag force also depends on the size and shape of the object.

Drag force increase the amount of fuel needed in air planes and cars. Engineers attempt to design planes and vehicles that reduce drag force.
