  What do you know about Edgar Allan Poe ?

 


 

Today 201 hundred years ago he was born. The day that marks Edgar Allan Poe’s 200th anniversary was that of 19th of January 2009. Even after all these years, the poet still has the power to impress throughout his work.
Let's know the most interesting details of his life and work, and we will also enjoy his scaring and spooky short stories. Are you ready?

This proyect will consist of three different tasks. Pay attention to them and read the instructions carefully.

FIRST TASK
Answer the following questions once you have visited the links provided on your right.

-Where was he born?
-Which were his first short stories?
-What is the name of the famous detective Poe created?
-Was his life similar to his short stories?
-Name at least five elements which may appear in Gothic Fiction.
-Mention some characterestics of the detective fiction and explain Poe's contribution to the genre.

SECOND TASK .
Now it is the time to get familiar with some of his most famous short stories. Firstly, you have to read the stories The Black Cat and The Oval portrait. Once you have read them, you will have to do the following activities.

The Black Cat

1.Can you find elements in common betweent the Black Cat and The Murders of the Rue Morgue?
2.Describe the relationship between the narrator and Pluto. Why does their relationship change?
3.Why does the narrator kill his wife?
4.Where is the cat at the end?

The Oval Portrait
1.Give several reasons to explain why Art is important in this story.
2.Why is the narrator injured?
3.Can you say that the Oval Portrait is a story inside a story?
4.Why does the Oval Portrait shock the narrator so much?
5.Is the bride important in the story?
6.Could you think about the moral of The Oval Portrait and The Black Cat?

TASK THREE .
Now it is the time to show your skills as a writer. In pairs, you have to create your own terror or mysterious short story. You have to follow three steps in order to write the story:
1.Pick up at least 3 elements which appear in Poe's short stories. They may also be elements of Gothic Fiction.
2.The story must be narrated in past tense and you can illustrated it too.
3.The extension of the story must be between 100 – 150 words.

Don't forget the best five stories will be published on a website.So do your best, and be original!
