Central Idea: Living beings compete for the planet's limited resources in order to survive. An inquiry into: * The microscopic world * The manner in which microbes make up part of the web of life * Classifying living things * Interactions and relationships between human beings and other living beings. Some of our favorite activities during this unit included: * exploring the pond outside school and formulating questions about it * using magnifying glasses and microscopes * examining the diversity of plant life around the pond * our web of life activity * coming up with our own categories to organize living beings and learning the scientific categories For their final project, students researched a living being of their choice that lives in or near the pond. They looked for interesting facts about their living being, as well as how it affects and depends on the pond, and speculated as to how the pond would be affected if that creature went extinct. They presented their findings to their classmates in some sort of visual project, such as a poster, diorama, or PowerPoint. |
