¡Moviéndonos!

On the Move!

Literally on the move!

Central Idea: People immigrate for social, economic, and political reasons.

An inquiry into:
* Immigration and migration of people
* Present and past issues about immigration
* The manner in which immigration has shaped our country

Some of our favorite activities during this unit included:
* our activity to kick off the unit, which tried to give students an idea of what refugees experience when fleeing their homes
* reading many good books in both English and Spanish, as a whole class, in small groups, and individually, and presenting some of those books to classmates
* guessing where our ancestors might be from, then going home to talk to family members to learn about our families' immigration stories and collect family treasures; sharing those treasures with classmates
* reading Long Road Home, a story by Katherine Paterson that was published several years ago in the Star Tribune
* painting to the music of the Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars

For their final project, students chose from one of four options: a poem for two voices, a message in a bottle, a poster, and writing an obituary. This project allowed them to show a lot of creativity as well as to convey all that they had learned about immigration. We ended up with a terrific diversity of final projects!
