Setting up your own colony |

Materials: poster board, paper, pencils, markers, crayons. Procedure: 1. Teacher will Introduce lesson by giving a brief overview of what they will be learning about in this chapter and reviewing the 13 original colonies. 2. Students will pass out slips of paper numbered 1-6. 3. Student will think about the types of things they would like to have if they had the opportunity to create a new place to live. 4. Students will write six things that they would include in their own colony on their slips of paper. 5. Students into get into groups of four. 6. Teacher will pass out and go over group work rules. 7. Students will talk about all of the things on their group members’ lists. 8. Students will decide which will be in their new colony. There may only be 3 items selected from each person’s list. Keep in mind there do not need to be that many…this number is just a maximum! 9. Pass out poster board paper to each group. 10. Students will then create a visual representation of their new colony with all of the items the agreed upon represented. 11. Each group will practice their presentation skills by sharing the poster of their colony with the class, explaining each included item and why they chose to include it. Assessment: Ability to work together and the ability to create a visual representation of their groups' new colony |
