Reading and learning about how students with dyslexia best learn is the first step in being able to teach these children. Using multisensory structured language programs is beneficial for every student, not only the ones with dyslexia. What is taught in these methods are phonology and phonological awareness which is the study of sounds and how they work, and sound-symbol association which is the knowledge of the various sounds and how they correspond to letters and combination of letters which represent these sounds. Syllable instruction includes the six basic types of syllables in the English language. Morphology is the sturdy of how morphemes, the smallest unit of meaning in a language, are combined from words. Syntax, sentence structure and grammar, and semantics, the meaning of the sentence are taught as well. Having students use all of their senses simultaneously to receive information is how the information is taught.

It was suggested that my daughter would greatly benefit from this style of teaching method. There are all day schools she could have attended but they were way too expensive for us. There was a Slingerland program at the local school we really wanted her to be in but because she wasn’t 2 years behind in any subject, she didn’t qualify for this special day class. Our only alternative was to hire a specialist who was trained in the Slingerland Method to tutor my daughter. It would have been much easier to have it incorporated in the classroom and have all the kids benefit. It is just good teaching.

Orton – Gillingham was the original method. Slingerland, Spalding, Project Read, and Wilson are all variations of the Orton-Gillingham method that were developed and written by Orton trained students.
