A child with dyslexia may function best in a school that is specifically designed to teach dyslexic children. Instead of hiring extra tutors, advocates, or lawyers, another alternative could be to place your child in an all day non public school that is specifically designed to teach a dyslexic child. Yes, these private schools are expensive but after hiring tutors, advocates, or lawyers, one may actually come out ahead, not to mention saving all the emotional trauma of dealing with advocates and school districts! The child would be taught specific learning strategies incorporated in the curriculum in the classroom all day with other dyslexic children.

A friend of mine whose daughter was severely dyslexic had her daughter in the local public school. While at school, the daughter was pulled out of class for special tutoring an hour each day but an hour a day was not enough for this girl. While the tutoring in school was beneficial, the girl was also missing valuable classroom information therefore, needed a tutor outside of school to help catch up on the work she missed as well as another tutor to help with dyslexic strategies. Since the child still needed tutoring outside of school, the parents felt the school was not adequately serving their child’s academic needs, so the family hired an advocate to fight the school district to include everything they thought the child should have within the school setting. Placing their daughter in an all day school may have been a better solution.
