Dear Parents, I know that you are anxious to help your child become a fluent reader. By the end of first grade, your child should be able to read 60 words in a minute. The more your child practices, the more likely your child will meet that standard. To help you with this, I will send home a weekly reading assignment. This is a parent-child assignment that your child cannot do alone. Here’s how it all works: The homework lesson includes a note to you that explains the assignment. Please read it carefully. After your child reads aloud, help your child answer the questions at the bottom of the page. Sign at the top of the page. Your signature indicates that you listened to your child read and that you helped with the questions. Return the paper to school on Friday. This simple project has been shown to improve reading fluency and comprehension. As the weeks progress, the story will become longer and the vocabulary will increase. With your help, I feel that it can have great benefits for your child. Please contact me if you have any questions concerning this project. The first lesson will be sent out on Monday September 27th. Thanks for all your help in getting your child off to a terrific start in becoming a great reader! Sincerely, Mrs. Waters |
