On August 17, 1862, four Dakota warriors were out looking for food for they were very hungry. Their people were starving because their lands had been ceded to the U.S. and the lands they had moved to provided none of their traditional ways to get food. They began to fight because one of the young men said another was afraid to take the eggs from a white man. The offended man said he was not afraid and that he would take the life of a white man that day. They then killed five settlers, and returned to their village to tell the tale. Their chief, Little Crow, realized that there would be repercussions for what the young men had done. He felt that he had no choice but to take his men to war. In this way, the Dakota-U.S. war of 1862 began. |
